We just got a sand-sifting Goby. Does anyone know how to feed them, if it's even necessary? Do they get enough from cleaning the sand (whatever falls to bottom)?

I feed my clowns very little and I'm pretty sure they eat every last bit. So I'm not sure if enough is falling for the Goby to eat. Should I do like with my anemone and let shrimp bits fall to the bottom?

Congrats on your Goby.Ilove ours, they are sooo much fun to watch.Ours is good size, now, and I swear he completely rearranges one corner of the tank with all his siffting. We feed our tank the frozen shrimp, maybe once or twice a week for treats, and Sifty gets his share.the rest he gets from the sand.Must be enough, cause hes growing!! We have quite a few fish though,so there is always stuff in the sand I'm sure. We also have one of those black and white stripe things(look like eels) I forgot what they are called. They sift and rearrange also, lol, seems like my Son is always repairing their mess!!

OK I'll see about leaving a little bit of shrimp outside his cave once or twice a week. Ours is already about 3 inches long - not sure how large they get full-grown.

So far we only have the anemone, and two clownfish for the goby to clean up after... so I'm not really sure that's enough for him.

Also, he's been in his cave for the last 48 hours or so (I'm not home during the day so I'm not sure if he comes out or not). Whenever I look in there, he's hiding. Is this normal behavior? Or should he be a little more active?

I am so leary about giving advice to someone else, especially salts, ours has been mostly trail and error.I can only tell you what has worked for us.Our Goby,is always out and always working.I swear he is obsessed. He does eat regular food when he feels like it.My Son thinks that your tank is so new and clean, that you should probably try to feed him on a regular basis for awhile,at least till the sand has a chance to build up stuff for him to eat.especially with the anemone, because they are both cleaners. Our tank was almost 6 months before we put in any cleaners.by that time we had quite a few fish, damsels, clowns,Tang.some quite large.wishing you good luck, maybe he just needs time to get acclimated to the tank, before he gets out and about.

No problem - thank you for sharing the information. I think your son is right. I left some shrimp outside the Goby's cave last night. This morning I noticed one piece was gone and the other untouched. The gone one might have just been swept away by the powerheads, but I'm pretty hopeful that the Goby ate it.
