June 2007 Winner:  EmsDocHollywood with Shauney!

Name: Shauney

Age: 1.5yo

Breed: Great Dane/German Shep X

Why: Shauney is a rescued dog.  She was found chained up in a room in an abandoned house with nothing to eat or drink.  Shauney has been with me for a while now.  This past weekend, I took Shauney on a late night walk.  I live in a very small, rarely lock your doors type of town. So I didnt think twice about taking a stroll in the dark.
Well, this particular evening while I was out walking, I saw a figure moving way up ahead of us.  It was a man with his hood up, a duffel bag over his shoulder, walking strait towards us... Being a woman, I became mildly alarmed (because I watch way too much Court TV) tightened my grip on the leash, but kept moving.  As he neared, a chill rushed down my spine.  I've always been told to trust my gut.  Well, Shauney must have sensed the wrong in the situation, because when he was about 25ft away, she leveled her head with her body and rose the heckles on her back and above her tail... She slowed and blew air out her nose hard enough to make a snorting sound... The man slowed up and looked at her, then turned around and went the other way.
Now, I dont know what that mans intentions were that night.  He could have been harmless, out for a walk himself.  But the fact is, I dont know, and never will.  But I do know that Shauney was there to back me up, regardless of the situation.  I will never forget that... She may have very well saved my life that night.

July 2007 Winners:  Cloudissocool with Luna and Risu with Shanks!

Name: Luna

Age: 6 months

Breed: Half-Moon Conure

Why: Very nice and gets along with everyone. When you sleeping she will cuddle up next to your face and fall asleep. when im in another room she flies off her cage and looks for me ^_^. She is learning to talk.
Tries to get along with Chico but Chico just denies her every time.

Name: Shanks

Age: 3-years-old

Breed/Species: budgerigar parakeet

Why should your pet be the Pet of the Month: Today is a special day for Shanks and I. Today marks the three year anniversary of the day I brought Shanks home from the pet store. The day I brought her home, I was inexperienced, and she was untame and frightened. I had only done some mild research on budgies before I brought Shanks home, lucky that I figured out what the heck a budgie was everytime I tried to search "parakeets" for information. We knew nothing of each other, and it began a journey where she would learn to trust humans, and I would learn the true meaning of responsible pet care. I don't know if I would have accepted a job at my local vet clinic, if it wasn't to pay for her supplies and vet bills. Shanks is an amazing green bird. She sings, squawks, her moods are clock-work (cheerful by day, cranky by night), she loves showers, waking people up at 7am, and flying laps around the room. She's always gotten along with her cage mates, even if they didn't agree *all* the time. She a furious player, loves to destroy, and a picky eater. She loves car rides and familiar songs (she chirps wildly to O-zone's "Dragostea Din Tea" (Numa Numa song)). She's every reason one should adore their budgies, spoil their budgies, and never forget that they're more then "just pakakeets." Here's to three noisy years with Shanks, and to many many more. This is our month Smiley

October 2007 Winner:  Paranormal with Jessie!

Name: Jessie

Age: Nine

Breed/Species: Appendix mare

Biography: Jessie was always incredibly fiesty and full of life. As soon as she was born (a little early, I might add), she was kicking and bucking around, always playfully (or not so playfully) beating up Gavy, her mom. Gavy, being a race horse, gave her that fiesty race horse blood, and her father, being an appendix himself, gave her the level headedness of a quarterhorse. Though not fond of most other horses, she was a very sweet mare, with a ton of peronality. She was always up for a race on the trails, but she was also very good in the riding arena. Just like her mom, who won all of her races before she hurt a tendon, Jessie always won every trail coarse she went into. She listened well, as long as she trusted you and you showed confidence in her. She was strong and proud, and very intelligent. Not once, ever, in her entire life had she ever been lame, until a few weeks ago. We don't really know what happened, but her left hind fetlock joint shattered. Having no possible way to fix it, not even with surgery, we were forced to put her down. However, she it at peace now, and she was ready to go. She would never be happy not being able to run and play like she used to.

Jessie was my best friend, and everyone who saw us said we had a real connection. It got to the point where I never even used a saddle, and even her head gear was just for safety's sake; I rarely used it. I'd talk to her, and she acted as if she understood every word of it. I understood all of her little quirks and she understood mine. I'll really miss her, but I know I'll see her again one day.
Rest in peace, Jessebelle.

March 2008 Winner: Kara with Velcro!

Name: Velcro

Age: Unknown, approximately 3-5 years

Breed/Species: Silvertail Sugar Glider

Biography:

Velcro is one of my most special sugar gliders because he is very unique. He came to me in a unique way as well. I came across an ad on craiglist written by a confused woman who needed information on sugar gliders. I responded to her quickly and offered to tell her anything she needed to know. Her name was Pat, and she was tempted to find a new home for him, but I convinced her to give her glider Velcro another shot. Maybe if she knew how to care for him, it would be easier on both of them.

He came into her care when her son moved back home after splitting up with his girlfriend. They had purchased Velcro together and supposedly Pat got "stuck" caring for Velcro when her son seemed to lose interest in him. She knew very little about sugar gliders but was absolutely certain of one thing, and that was that she loved him so very much.

Pat agreed to give Velcro another shot. However after a few weeks she emailed me again and said it just was not working out and she needed to find him a new home. She had quite enough animals as it was and although she cared about Velcro very much, she wasn't happy with the fact that her son had just left him for Pat to clean up after.

Although I already had 4 of my own sugar gliders, I felt a special connection with Pat and Velcro. I wanted to be certain he would go to a good, permanent home. And the only way I could be absolutely sure of this is if I offered my own care. Pat willinging accepted my help and a meeting was arranged.

The hand-over was very sad. Pat was certain he was going to a good place, but she had grown to love Velcro so much. She cried as she handed him to me in his pouch. I looked in and fell in love instantly. There was just something about this glider that made me want to give him the world. Once goodbyes were made, my mom and I drove back home.

The first time I attempted to handle Velcro I was bitten very hard. This was discouraging, but I wasn't angry. Everything was new to him and he had gone through so many drastic changes within the past months. When I released him into his freshly cleaned cage, I immediately noticed something very beautiful and different about him. His tail was completely grey, whereas with normal gliders they have a black tip. He also seemed much lighter, to almost have a "blonde" look to him (compared to other gliders).

Upon further research I decided that he very well could be a rare Silvertail glider. However, I knew that his diet wasn't exactly the best before coming into my hands. I had to wait at least 6 months with him on a good diet before we could determine the true qualities of his coat. Sure enough, it has been at least 6 months and he still has the same beautiful fluffy silver tail.

Pat was kind enough to write these words about me, for me to put on my website:

"I wanted to let everyone know that had it not been for Kara, my sugar glider probably would not be on this
earth right now.  My son's girlfriend brought one home for them.  Sadly to say, they knew nothing about
gliders. Later, my son moved back home with glider in tow.  I started doing some research on gliders and
was amazed at the amount of information out there and how little I knew about them.  I put out a request for
help, "Information needed on gliders".  Kara was one of the first to respond.  She answered my questions
very quickly, was very up front and honest about what she was telling me.  I knew that "my" glider needed
more than what we were able to provide him.  After very careful consideration and a lot of soul searching, I
decided that it was best to find him a new home.  I talked with Kara, and decided that the new home should
be with her.  I am happy to say that Velcro has now become part of her family and now has a mate and is
doing very well.  I miss the little guy, but know that he is so much better off where he is.  Thank you Kara for
all your help, the information, the reassurance and for loving these little critters enough to want to help
others."

Velcro has long since warmed up to me quite a bit. He is content to stay on my arm, and I am very glad to say that although he bit me so hard on his very first day in my home - he has not to this day bitten me since. He is very fond of attention and loves treats like mangos and papaya and yogurt drops.

Since coming into my family, Velcro has been paired with a lovely glider named Skittles, and with her help has become the proud dad of one beautiful girl (Button) and is currently the expectant father of two more joeys.

Velcro will be with me for the rest of his days.
