Causes Of Fin Rot

Fin Rot is caused by a bacterial infection. These bacteria are normally found in aquariums but do not affect healthy fish. One of the main triggers for this poor water quality. Other causes are stress from bullying fish and damage by fin nipping fish.

Fin Rot Symptoms

  • Fins look frayed.
  • Pin holes in fins.
  • Bloody fin tips.
  • Fin edges turn white.
  • Base of affected fins become enflamed.
  • Fins may completely rot away.
  • The tail can also be affected, commonly called tail rot.

Fin Rot Treatment

Before treating test your water to make sure you are getting normal reading. To treat fin rot you should begin with a water change. If you have a hospital / quarantine tank use that to treat the affected fish. Commercial treatments for fin rot include Mardel's Maracyn (Reviews), Mardel's Maracyn-Two (Reviews), Waterlife Myxazin, and API Melafix. When using antibiotics make sure you follow the directions, many aquarists are facing antibiotic resistant strains.
