cockatoos and budgies, which i'm assuming is what you meant by "parakeet" are different species of parrot, not different breeds.

that said, no, it would not be a good idea to house these two birds together. budgies are very tiny parrots, while cockatoos are very large with very large beaks. a cockatoo could kill a budgie with one bite.

another word of caution, cockatoos are very high maintenance parrots. they are known for being clingy which tends to lead to behavioral issues such as screaming and self-mutilation. please visit this website before bringing a 'too home: www.mytoos.com they are a very serious comittment.

by any chance, did you mean cockatiel?

cockatiels are a little different. they're smaller, like budgies, and they tend to get along, as i know a few people who have both. having a spacious cage is important, over 22x22" (the bigger, the better) since 'tiels are a little more mellow then budgies. there is also a possibility of the budgie and the tiel not getting along, in which they would have to be caged separately.

if you do decide to bring a new feathered friend home, don't forget to quarantine! are you familiar with it?

WE have a cockateil, that is a very demanding boy.We got him as a rescue. At the time we had a lovebird, and she was scared to death of the teil.We never put them together,in the same cage.just the teil being in the same room would send the lovebird in to the corner of her cage and she would shake, and turn her back on him, till he was taken out of the room.A mature teil is quite large compared to a keet or lovebird.I haven't even tried to put him in the same room as my parrotlet  just my thots Bev

I have heard of cockatiels and budgies living in perfect harmony together - but it's hit or miss. If they don't like each other, they don't like each other.

I work in a pet shop, and we sometimes keep cockateils and budgies together. We've never had a problem with fighting. We even have a lovebird who has his very own pet budgies Tongue

Undecided :-\just  goes to show you cant make assumptions.Shortly after my last post, there was a listing on craigs list that was rehoming a Teil and he HAD to go with HIS keet.It would seem our teil was in the minority, for being such a bad boy!!

I think it's so cute when pets have their own pets. Hahaha.
